Nithya’s practice is wary of the conceptual complicity of discipline and often invites the non-artist as co-performer. In the participatory dance project Sacred Grooves for Secular Spaces, Nithya summons a radical congregation of hope with dancers, composers and faith leaders who delve into the interior architecture of belief.

Her ongoing body of work, Nouveaurasas, is a contemporary interpretation of the 9 rasas, loosely translated as ‘states of being’ in Indian aesthetics, evoking verbal-visceral responses through intimate interdisciplinary encounters. Based on the Indian comic series Akbar-Birbal, on the camaraderie between a Muslim King and his Hindu Minister in a Mughal court, Nithya co-devised Outwitted!, an interactive experience for children and young people along the Merri Creek waterway in Melbourne’s north using elements from the nature trail as props for play in this durational work.

Nithya has also participated in processes steered by other artists including Tim Miller, Melati Suryodarmo and Akira Takayama.
